Rated R for strong bloody violence, sexual content, and language.
Sinners was definitely the “breakout” of early 2025 (and the rest of the year). With truly original horror movies being rare these days, audiences were pleased to see something that broke the mold of genres, with a great blend of terror and music. In fact, audiences and critics alike enjoyed Sinners so much that it now sits with the title of the most Oscar-nominated movie of all time. Sinners is a masterclass in everything from cinematography to choreography to sound design. Director Ryan Coogler had specialists for almost everything — a 1920s gambling coach and a twins expert, to name a few.
The plot focuses on Sammy, a sharecropper in Mississippi, and his infamous cousins, the Smoke Stack Twins, both played by Michael B. Jordan. The twins want to start a juke joint in their hometown after a semi-successful run as mobsters in Chicago.
Just as everything seems to be going well, an eldritch vampire stakes out the juke joint as his next target, hoping to steal Sammy’s gift of music that brings the world of the dead and the living together as one. What really sets Sinners apart is its boldness. As you watch, you feel Sammy’s songs roll through you, woven into the fabric of the story in a way that is both haunting and beautiful. It creates a singularly unique atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll.
Sinners is not just a horror movie; it’s a commentary on history, music, and race.
