The story of Macbeth is a classic tale that has been told for 400 years and retold countless times. The most recent and important versions of Macbeth come from the most competitive, brutal, cutthroat competition ever…the Mac-Ademy Awards!
Ms. McFarlane’s English 10 Intensified students produced scenes from the play Macbeth and added a new spin on the idea. For example, Macbeth, but it’s in the office, or Powerpuff Girls, or just Macbeth and his friends battling it out on the playground. An added challenge is that students and staff at ACC got to view and vote for who should win this year’s “Mac-Ademy Awards” in the following categories:
- Best Modern-Day Connection
- Best Animation
- Best Acting
- Most Professional
- Most Relevant Soundtrack
Here’s a guide to some of the Oscar-Level Nominees:
Macbeth’s Straight A’s: This impressive animated story depicts Mac and Beth, who are tempted to cheat and fulfill the witch’s prophecy of being valedictorian.
Macbethy: This is a take on the scene where Macbeth starts seeing the ghost of Banquo. And an added presentation of Lady Macbeth going over a presentation about “67”!
MacTrump’s Breakup Saga: Life is but a walking shadow in the world of a U.S. president when his closest ally betrays him.
MacBasketball In this story, Brooklyn’s basketball coach threatens to “decommission” Johnson, even though she is the better player.
Macbeth Goes Gossip Girl: Chuck is after his dad’s empire, and takes it by any means necessary. You can guess what happens next.
McMean Girls: Peer pressure for the popular girls pushes characters to do terrible things in this Shakespeare-inspired remake.
Mythic Falls: A retelling of Macbeth, Act 1, scene 7, with Macbeth and Lady Macbeth discussing how to rise above.
Macbeth on the Playground: A comedic story of kids creating the fight of Macbeth vs Macduff on the playground, because do these guys even know how serious their disagreements are?
Macbeth at the Office: A cast of characters recreating the magic of The Office with a twist, telling Macbeth’s last two battles before his defeat, with tropes from the show.
Code is Foul, and Foul is Code: Here’s another animated film where Makbeth and Makjeff try to stay calm after committing a murder… Dun dun dun!
Macbeth at the Frat House: When a frat brother pushes Macbeth to “durst be a man” and pull a prank on the college dean. Toxic masculinity is the cause, and recklessness is the effect.
Burnt Rice: Husbands and wives are bound to argue in the kitchen sometimes. Macbeth fails to cook rice due to guilt and visions of ghosts everywhere around him, and Lady Macbeth is not impressed.
Macbeth on the Gram: A series of Instagram stories shows Macbeth’s ordered assassination of Banquo and Fleance with a soundtrack inspired by Travis Scott and the Offspring. Guilt ensues.
Mpire: If you like action, you’ll love this choreographed film depicting “Big M’s” rise to power in a high-action set in a modern-day drug cartel instead of Medieval Scotland.
Powerpuffbeth A telling of Macbeth where the witches are instead Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup telling Mojo Jojo his fate.
MacText! YO, this is an amazing quality depicting the defeat of Macbeth in a group chat text conversation (bias alert: this one is mine).
Mac Calico Critters: Who knew the Macbeths could be so cute, even as they lose touch with reality and all sense of joy in the world?
As you can see, there’s something for everyone, from action to drama to romance.
Although the Mac-Ademy Awards ceremony was put on hold while sophomores build their Best Life Fair exhibits, the winners will be announced right after the event on May 22. We can’t wait for you all to see who produced the best of the best!
