On October 26, 2025, nineteen Buddhist monks started their 2,300+ mile walk to advocate for peace in Fort Worth, TX. These monks come from Theravada Buddhist Monasteries all over the world, led by Pannakara. Tuesday morning, they reached Washington, D.C., and are expected to arrive back at their home temple on the 14th. Just a few days ago, they passed through Arlington and stayed at Marymount University before reaching the end of their trek.
The message that the monks are trying to convey was simple, but meaningful. Throughout their journey, they have given multiple speeches, and crowds gathered with many trying to witness history and experience the meaningful words. The monks deliver a message of peace and compassion, in effort to combat the conflict in today’s world. Many people make a long drive to witness The Walk for Peace, even those who do not know of Buddhism. This event has spread the message to many and left people uplifted and moved. Along their journey, people brought flowers, signs, and respect to show support.
During their two-day stay in DC, they made a few public appearances. Tuesday, they appeared at the Washington National Cathedral, and on Wednesday at the Lincoln Memorial. To keep the viewers and the Monks safe, police closed off roads nearby. The Monks also made several other appearances in DC.
The Monks’ demonstration have brought people together, leaving a lasting message. The hope for the Monks and for everyone is to make an impact. Even as the walk ends, the message will last. On the day of the walk, Pannakara posted this powerful statement to Facebook: “The physical journey may be reaching its destination, but the walk for peace continues always–in each of us, through each of us, for all being everywhere. Thank you so much for walking with us”.
