ACC’s Health Science and Medical Terminology are in quite the predicament right now. The two classes teacher, Ms. Weinberg, announced on February 26 on Canvas that she was going on medical leave for a period of time. While her students wish her well and a swift recovery, they’re not actually aware of what she is recovering from. Since her announcement on Canvas, Ms. Weinberg has not been able to respond to any emails, even from her long term substitute Ms. Nguyen.
A similar issue occured last year in Medical Terminology when Ms. Kalsoom moved away and was replaced by Ms. Weinberg. Luckily she was able to implement the projects and assignments Ms. Kalsoom had prepared prior to their absence. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much for Ms. Nguyen to assign except for homework directly from the textbook. Now Health Science and Medical Terminology don’t get to fully experience what a career in medicine would be like.
Ms. Ngyuen has been struggling to navigate the multiple teaching websites for course material Ms. Weinberg has implemented in her classes because she didn’t have the same amount of access and control Ms. Weinberg had to actually give out and grade assignments. For example, Cengage, their online textbook with quizzes and tests, and Stemfuse, which Ms. Nguyen ultimately gave up on because she didn’t have teacher level access for it. She and her classes decided that the information the website provided wasn’t important enough to continue completing its assignments.
For the Health Science class specifically, they are meant to take the National Consortium for Health Science Education, or NCHSE exam sometime in May. However, for a while, Ms. Nguyen had no idea when this test was supposed to take place. All of the problems have been especially stressful for both Ms. Nguyen and the health science students. Luckily, we ACC students are quickly flexible and adaptive as Health Science students have since taken a practice test and feel more confident about their final exam. Let’s wish Ms. Weinberg well, and the Health Science and Medical Terminology students the best!
