On Tuesdays in the box between 3-4:00 PM, ACC’s very own archery club takes place. Every Tuesday they come together and set up the range to practice their shooting. They spend their time taking shot after shot to get better each time and learn from each other. They often discuss technical strategies to improve their shooting. These teammates uplift each other and support each other to get better and be better. Their main points of improvement at the moment are anchor points and draw release. These are the main two components of archery technique.
Lucy Day and Xander Haywood, (Juniors) president and vice president of this club respectively, were recruited by Mr. Hall last year. At the beginning of their sophomore year, Mr. Hall, one of our health and P.E. teachers mentioned his idea to start their archery club for our ACC archers and they expressed their interest. Lucy said “Let us know if you carry that out, we’d love to help.” Later in the year, Mr. Hall took action and quickly roped in Lucy and Xander. Little did they know the community they’d create. Now they have around ten members who meet consistently to work hard and help each other improve.
Lucy said that her hope for this club was to get more practice for herself and to raise popularity and interest in the sport so she Could help others improve their skills. Xander was eager to see how many people would show interest and to improve his skills.
Their hopes for the future are to enter in both friendly in-school competitions and tournaments like NASP. NASP is a county wide tournament that involves several school archery teams from all around Arlington. It is very competitive and very fun according to its past participants. They also plan to do observable club activities like a balloon shooting competition with possible medals for the best shooters. If you’re interested in archery make sure to stop by the box Tuesday after school to check out the club, improve your shooting, and maybe make some new friends along the way!
