There is nothing that can bond a whole class of high school seniors together like a good competition with a whole lot of money at stake. Some version of Senior Assassins is played at virtually every high school across the country. It gained popularity in the 2010s, where it was originally portrayed on TV shows such as iCarly and Gossip Girl.
Senior Assassins’ requires only a small fee, that everyone pays as a buy-in, and a water gun to play. Included students are assigned a fellow player as a target, and they must get them “out” (by use of the water gun) within a given time period to stay in the game. To stay protected from the person who is “hunting” them, students are required to participate in various safeties. These safeties typically involve additional items, clothing, or repetitive movements. For example, to stay safe from elimination, students might be required to wear tutus and hold their arms over their head similarly to a ballerina. Of course, there are some additional rules to keep the game safe and enjoyable. Commonly, students cannot get their targets out during active class time, at school sponsored events/practices, in personal residences, or at the student’s place of work. Due to the large number of students that participate in the game, there have been countless variations that have appeared and been played across the United States.
At Arlington Tech, the game is much shorter than your average home school, simply due to the low number of students playing. Still, it is an exciting activity to close out the end of senior year. According to senior Marin McCormack, “Senior Assassins is stressful yet also fun. You must always stay on your toes because you never know which one of your classmates may have you as their target and eliminate you. The safeties are so much fun to participate in! Even though they can be embarrassing, they bring something new and exciting to each day.” There is no doubt it is a highlight of senior year for the participating students!
