Although spring is still a while away, that just means there is plenty of time for speculation. So without further delay, here are my top 10 teams to look out for in the 2025 MLB season listed from biggest playoff threat to smallest playoff threat.
LA Dodgers
With a strong pitching core, the reigning MVP, and many other great hitters and fielders, there is quite literally no way I see them falling out of contention.
NY Yankees
Although they were only one game away from being swept by the now world champion Dodgers, they still have one of the league’s best hitters in Aaron Judge, not to mention a young and capable pitching core. So even without Juan Soto they are without a doubt contenders.
NY Mets
Not only do they now have Juan Soto, but also a reliable pitching rotation, some skilled fielders, and now a star with championship experience may just be the final piece to the puzzle.
KC Royals
With the spring emergences of Nick Pratto, Nick Loften, and Sam Long, and the recent addition of veteran infielder Jonathen India, the Royals seem ready to join the Chiefs in making the final championship push.
PHL Phillies
Although they had a disappointing playoff performance leading to their early exit after championship aspirations, their roster is still one of the best in the league, and depending on the productivity of the aging Trae Turner and Bryce Harper, a Championship might be in their reach once again.
CLV Guardians
With a young and productive core and one dominant X-factor of a bullpen that includes Tim Herrin, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase they are most definitely one of the most underrated teams in baseball.
CIN Reds
Although they were very inconsistent and a few games away from the postseason, they are gaining ground now more than ever with the addition of pitcher All Star Brady Singer to a pitching line up that already has another in Hunter Greene and possibly even the addition of Silver Slugger Teoscar Hernandez to add to a batting lineup with the consistent Spencer Steer and All-Star Elly De La Cruz, they are most definitely in the postseason discussion.
MIL Brewers
If the Brewers can get second career high seasons out of William Contreras, Willy Adames, and Christian Yelich, they may be looking at another crack in the playoffs. Although contention might still be a little out of their reach and although they won their division, they also faced close to no competition being the only team that even won more than 83 games.
DET Tigers
With an All-Star bound young core that already proved to be capable of the playoffs last year, they will most likely get another crack at the playoffs. Although when talking about a championship, it’s still way too early to get that ahead of ourselves.
BLT Orioles
With the additions of two great two-way players in Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sánchez to an already playoff capable roster, they are at least looking like they will make the postseason.
There you have my top ten, and if you want to share your opinion with me, I’m not going to listen or care because this list is about my take not yours. If I wanted to hear it, this would have been a poll not an opinion piece. You don’t like it? Make your own newspaper.
