The Origin of Preston
By Vivien McGinn
As many of you taking journalism class may know, a special new addition to the room named Preston has joined the club. Preston, a small but lively Dubia roach was found in room 504 during journalism class around 12:00 PM. He was soon beloved by the entire class with a deep bond to each and every student. But it wouldn’t be long before the journalism team came to a shocking discovery. The animal science warehouse had its own enclosure for Dubia roaches that look astonishingly just like Preston. They soon came to wonder if Preston may have escaped his enclosure. Had our little friend climbed out while the lid was open and made a run for it? His first, and maybe only, chance of freedom was in that moment and Preston may have taken it. Did he walk down the road and up the ramp of the first trailer, right into room 504? While we wonder if this could be the origin of Preston’s existence, we also think about the fact that he might miss home. Should we take Preston back to his enclosure? To his family? This is the question that lingers in room 504.

Journalism’s New Class Pet
By Eimi Tuttle
Just before noon in Ms. McFarlane’s room on January 21, her Journalism class acquired a new pet: Preston the Roach. One of her students, freshman Vivien McGinn, spotted a small critter crawling across the floor. She acted quickly, finding a small plastic container and a piece of paper to enclose it. Then, she drew a line around the container, because of a video she’d seen on TikTok that claimed that it would keep Preston within its borders. Eventually, she even sacrificed part of her snack, giving Preston a singular Goldfish to munch on. Ms. McFarlane took notice, using him as an example of an assignment for the whole class. Before setting off on her assignment, of course, Vivien built a small house for Preston out of duct tape and notebook paper. Alas, as the house was still under construction, and not one but TWO buffoons decided to step over Preston’s enclosure, knocking it over and risking his precious life. Luckily, Vivien managed to save the poor thing. Besides those two incidents, Preston will hopefully live a long and happy life.
