Joke in the Box?
By: Emory Loughry
Music blaring, pool noodles making contact with bodies, and laughter filled a corner of the Arlington Career Center. What was the event? A regular day in the 4B physical education class at ACC. The game was a version of freeze tag that involved students hitting members of the opposing team with pool noodles to “freeze” them and passing a soccer ball to members of their own team to free them from the “freeze”. This game represents the running trend of unconventional games that are regularly playing in PE at ACC.
As a result of the unconventional nature of the activities that take place in the box, there is a running theme of laughter that follows any mention of physical education at the Arlington Career Center. However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t appreciative laughter. As one student explained, “When I’m slammed with work in all my other classes, I know I can come to PE and not brace myself for more work.” Not only does this make the class an easy place to unwind, I’ve heard it’s also pretty therapeutic to hurl pool noodles at your classmates.
