The Ceiling Goes up as Preparations Continue
Byline: Ilana Hoffer
Bang, weer, hmmmm, the sounds of drills, hammers and handheld saws fill the carpentry lab with eight carpentry two and three students hard at work. The students are currently working on finishing a construction focused project to prepare for ACC carpentry’s first ever Skills USA competition happening on Wednesday, January 29th.
With last year’s challenge in hand for the most helpful practice. The project is full of life with a variety of skills based in designing and building an elevated base, wall framing and other skills involved in the construction of a house. Beyond that, the students were actively finishing building rafters and ceiling joists to make the finishing touches onto the 3 sided houses. With each student working in a pair, the houses are almost done after a month of work with the final culmination of the project being during 4A on Friday, January 24th with a practice of talking to judges and finalizing all parts.
With this assignment being a key part of ACC history, the sounds are of joy and nerves and not frustration.
