THE PROJECT
During the Cornerstone launch, the 9th grade teachers at Arlington Tech announced a new objective. In previous years, freshmen were tasked to design a hydroponics plan. Hydroponics is the method of growing plants in a water based nutrient solution to provide ideal growing conditions for plant life, as well as making it easier for plant growth.
This year’s focus goes a little further into the subject of betterment for the ACC community with the topic of Urban Planning. The goal for this year is to redesign and influence city planning in Arlington to create a more sustainable and vibrant commute for students.
THE PLAN
Students will be working on different projects for each month in different classes. This Cornerstone will likely be ending after the Town Hall event in April. With this said, let’s dive into what you can expect for this year’s Cornerstone.
First, we started with topic of public art in English classes. Students proposed all kinds of public art to beautify the commute for students.
Next in December, students are learning about transit in Engineering, likely planning for new bus routes or bus stops, leaning towards the more sustainable side for this whole Cornerstone.
Then follows math in February where we’ll focus on a walking trail. Since students were already asked about how transportation could be made easier for kids in PEP, this is probably foreshadowing the upcoming walking trail plan for the Cornerstone. Plus, Health/PE will explore Trail Fitness, which is a good connection and science focusing on the ecosystem connection to trails.
To finish off the Cornerstone in April, we’ll have time in social studies to produce public service announcements before the Town Hall. Freshmen students like me don’t know quite to expect for that event, but April will come just like that, hopefully answering all of our questions.
THE RECAP
To summarize, the Cornerstone of 2024-2025’s main focus is to make student commutes better in both aesthetic and efficiency, with different classes teaching the students about their assigned topics to eventually lead up to a presentation in Town Hall to hopefully make a change to the current state the commutes are in. I hope that this short piece helped you understand the unfolding events going on with the
Arlington Tech freshman class.
