On October 29, ACC’s girls and boys frisbee teams played tough matches against the Yorktown Patriots. The boys team played first with lots of enthusiasm on the field, communicating well, and running plays to outsmart Yorktown’s defense. At halftime, our Archers were down five to three, but they had some tricks up their sleeve to turn the game around. At the start of the second half, seven new players took to the field with determination, putting everything into the last 30 minutes. If you don’t know already, when substituting players on and off the field in ultimate frisbee, each player is replaced, allowing the team to reset periodically. After a few awesome plays, the players switched off and the new team took the same energy from their other teammates, meeting Yorktown at a tie midway through the second half at six to six. Yorktown quickly came back, however, and finished out strong, winning nine to six. Though unfortunate for our hard working team, their effort will not be overlooked.
Next was the girls game, and they started soon after the boys game came to a close. On the sidelines before the match, their coach, Mr. Darraugh, walked them through some plays. The team’s favorite play is called stacking, where the handlers (the primary disc throwers) stand in a two-by-one formation next to each other and the rest of the players stand in a one by one line in front of them. Starting at the back of the line, a player will run out from the line and cut in front, getting open to receive a pass from a handler. After a pass isn’t made, the other players in the line begin to dart to the side and get open. Despite their best efforts, Yorktown kept their winning streak and won the game four to seven. No matter the outcome, ACC’s frisbee teams always have a fun night full of competition.
