Mayah Millhouse is a junior at Arlington Tech who, among other things, enjoys many aspects of art. She prides herself on writing songs, the ideas for which, she says, seem like “an email from someone out there in the world. They send me their topic, and one day I’ll get back to them with a song and they’ll feel better.” In fact, she hopes that one day, Arlington Tech will remember her as a singer above all else. In her freshman year, Millhouse sang “Lift Every Voice” in front of the whole school during a Black History Month assembly. In her sophomore year, she sang at the end of her Oratorical Contest speech. Singing in front of everyone, although it’s amazing to see, can take a lot of effort for Millhouse. “I do eventually overcome the anxiety, but still, singing in front of everyone is my scariest dream.”
Besides singing, Millhouse also enjoys other forms of art. Last year, she learned how to make bags. Since then, she has started drawing flowers on the bags she makes. Her mother even encourages her to turn it into a business, adding her flowers to other things like mugs.
For now, Millhouse plans to finish her Associate’s Degree in General Studies at ACC, then go to George Mason University for either creative writing, music, or Chinese. Then, she plans on getting a graduate degree in either music production or composition. “I want to be able to make accompaniments to the songs I write,” she says.
Mayah Millhouse is the Creative Manager of the ACC Chronicle, meaning she’s in charge of making many of the graphics on the website. In such a position, her creativity truly shines through, allowing her to show the world the artistic person she is.
